Visiting Historic Cannery Row in Monterey, California

California native son John Steinbeck (1902-1968) was the Pulitzer Prize-winning American author who brought Cannery Row alive in his 1945 novel by that name. A visit to historic Cannery Row in Monterey, California, today finds banners carrying phrases from the book hanging from street lamps up and down the mile-long street along the bay. Once called Ocean View Avenue, the street was re-named for Steinbeck’s work.

A Silver Sea of Sardines

The street was once lined with large sardine fisheries and packed with salty characters as found in the pages of Steinbeck’s writing.
